Tax Free

In 1774 the US consisted of 13 colonies who sent delegates to Philadelphia Pennsylvania to form the First Continental Congress. The colonies were under the rule of England's King George III. The delegates were unhappy with England, but were not yet ready to declare war. The colonies were concerned about the taxes that had to be paid to England. A committee to draft the Declaration of Independence included John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Philip Livingston and Roger Sherman. Thomas Jefferson was the actual writer of the first draft of the declaration. Jefferson's version was revised byBenjamin Franklin and John Adams before it went to the Continental Congress where they also edited the document. A vote was taken late in the afternoon of July 4th. Of the 13 colonies, 9 voted in favor of the Declaration. To make it official John Hancock, President of the Continental Congress, signed the Declaration of Independence. It is said that John Hancock signed his name "with a great flourish" so "King George can read that without spectacles!."
